Bouncer’s Style Tips & Huge Traps
Back when I worked as a bouncer, it was understood that if you wanted to be taken seriously – you showed up to work, dressed head to toe in all black EVERYTHING.
Though it doesn’t make sense given the dark atmosphere of most night clubs, I didn’t want to be the asshole who bucked the system so I did my due diligence when I got hired and went shopping for an all black wardrobe
A bouncers wardrobe consists of four things;
- A black button down shirt or t-shirt
- A pair of black dress pants or slacks
- Black steel toed military boots
- A bad-ass, black leather jacket
Acquiring the shirt, pants and boots was easy. The real struggle was finding a black leather jacket which fit around my 52 inch shoulders and looked halfway decent.
If you’ve ever been in the market for a dope leather jacket, I don’t have to tell you that good leather jackets are hard to come by.
A bad-ass leather jacket has gotta look as if it’s been well-worn, suffered through it’s fair share of trials & tribulations and come out the other end looking all the better.
My stringent criteria for the ideal leather jacket made this pursuit a lengthy process. I knew exactly what I wanted and refused to settle for less. After months of scouring through store isles and damn near giving-up… I finally found the perfect leather jacket
It was a Sunday afternoon, I had woken up to meet my girlfriend (at the time) for a late breakfast. Our walk to the dim-sum spot took us through Toronto’s bohemian neighborhood, Kensington Market
As we walked through the streets – a vintage store painted in a vibrant yellow caught the corner of my eye.
Call it fate, karma or whatever…
But something about this store, told me it was the right place to find the perfect jacket for me. We walked into the store and as I looked past all the clutter, towards the back – there it hung
It was an all black, bomber-style, motorcycle jacket, snug-fitting with just the right amount of wear and tear.
It looked bad-assed , it was perfect…
To illustrate how much I loved this jacket, I feel no ways about telling you that I wore it everywhere. If you ask anyone of my friends they will tell you that I didn’t go anywhere without putting on that jacket.
So, imagine the heartbreak the day I went to put it on my jacket, only to find that it no longer fit
Now before you go an blame a poor diet or a lack of will power on this sad turn of events, I should tell you… I had been training
It wasn’t a lack of exercise which was responsible for the ill-fit
It was the opposite, the exposure to a handful of new exercises
A few months into working as a bouncer, it had dawned on me that my training had gotten stagnant and I needed something new to shake things up
I made the decision to transition from Powerlifting to a more explosive, Olympic weightlifting style of training
The new style of training had me hoisting the barbell over my head repeatedly throughout my workouts. The repetition of these explosive patterns tapped allowed me to tap into more of my high threshold muscle fibers and forced me to experience an unprecedented rate of muscular development in my traps, shoulders and forearms
Walk into any commercial gym and you will notice that the majority of people are performing bodybuilding style training with a heavy emphasis on a controlled tempo during both the concentric and eccentric phases of the lift, though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – a lot of these lifters could benefit from varying the tempo of their exercises and incorporating MORE explosive movements to build bigger, stronger muscle
When you perform exercises with an explosive concentric movement you tap into more fast twitch muscle fibers, these bad boys are important because they are the fibers with the greatest capacity for growth
A second benefit to this explosive style of training is; when performed properly, most explosive barbell movements dictate there be a controlled eccentric component to the lift(unless the load is thrown). This is good because – the amount of force required to yield a weight moving eccentrically during an explosive pattern like a hang clean can lead to rapid increases in the corresponding musculature
As you can see, it was only a matter of time before I would outgrow the jacket given this new style of training
So why am I telling you this?
Because, if you want to get yolked and build up a thick pair of traps you should be doing some explosive barbell work to tap into your high threshold motor units and illicit growth in the fast twitch fibers
