All these years spent working as a personal trainer, has given me access for whole whack of different people. I’ve sat across the table at fancy restaurants with multimillionaires and also stood behind stone cold killers they prepared for squat
After training hundreds of clients most of them have dissolved into a mental mash in my brain.
A few names are memorable but even fewer of them are unforgettable
One client who will forever be etched into my memory banks was a guy named Jimmy (the psychopath) Cotton
Jimmy was a fairly young guy in his mid-30s, looking at him you would have suspected that he spent most of his formative years navigating his way through the criminal underbelly.
At the tender young age of 24 Jimmy had proved himself to be a formidable gangster and earned his stripes becoming one of the youngest leading members of the outlaw biker gang that shall go unnamed
Aside from the notoriety his position offered him, Jimmy was a fairly unsuspecting fellow.
He had the look of any young guy who had gone through his fair share of hardships I suppose but
He rarely looked the part of a violent criminal
Jimmy and walked in to the gym like anyone else, he sat across from a sales manager and made small talk, then inquired about personal training.
Jimmy was a naturally skinny dude with toothpick arms.
He lacked physical presence but somehow still came across as someone you wouldn’t want to cross.
He told our manager he was there to put on some size and was smart enough to hire a professional to help him with this endeavor.
It just so happens on that fateful day I happened to be the trainer with the open slot in his schedule for Jimmy.
When I first met him I greeted him as I’d treat any other brand new personal training client, had it not been for the whispers and stares that followed I would have been none the wiser about his checkered past.
Over time as Jimmy and I trained things started to come together, at first it was the nods of respect from the toughest guys in the gym. A few days later I noticed him pull up on a bad-ass vintage bike, I finally figured it out when I caught Jimmy flash a known member of the gang a sign as they passed each other in corridor leading out to the gym floor.
I knew better than to press him about it… as curious as I was I knew guys like Jimmy demanded discretion
I will say this though…
Once i found out it sort of made sense why he was so rabid about gaining size.
I had always assume Jimmy was bulking up strictly for aesthetic purposes but know that I knew he was a bad ass biker I understood the desire for physical size and power – his position called for it.
I mean, sure you could still be a high ranking member of a violent bike gang if you were his size… but I’d imagine it would always cause some measure of doubt
We started training and right away Jimmy took to the weights like a fish to water, he loved pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. The problem with Jimmy’s intense approach was that I knew it would lead to either overtraining or eventual injury.
One day after yet another grueling workout I pulled Jimmy aside and propositioned him to take on a new approach to training. There was a workout I had been toying with for some of my other “hard gainer” clients and I’d seen great success. It was based on the notion of high volume training mixed with frequent training. I told Jimmy I had seen guys who had struggled to gain weight get fairly jacked in little to no time.
If he was willing to put his trust in me and the program…
I could help him pack on some serious size.
Jimmy glared over at me with an look I’d never seen before. For a moment I felt the pang of panic one feels when thrust into a potentially life threatening situation

The program I ended up giving Jimmy had to fulfill a few key criteria
1: It had to pack on tons of lean-body mass
I figured a high volume approach would be best for packing on mass. All the research I had done suggested that high volume training had a different effect on the muscle fibers than traditional strength training.
High volume training led to increased growth of the non contractile properties of the muscle fiber giving the appearance of a bigger fuller muscle. This is why bodybuilders usually look bigger and more muscular than powerlifters even though powerlifters lifted more weight.
2: It had to force the body to become functionally stronger
Imagine the hot water I would be in if my workout only made Jimmy look stronger
Any program I eventually designed had to get Jimmy stronger too. I knew the typical bodybuilding approach was limited when it came to creating real strength, so I included some high intensity strength training into the mix.
If I were able to make Jimmy both BIG and strong he could never accuse me of not delivering when someone decided to test him
3: It had to work fuckin fast
I knew I had about a month to deliver before Jimmy became impatient.
If I went over that deadline there was a very good chance I’d end up in a basement somewhere hoping I hadn’t flunked out of art school.
If this program was gonna have any impact on Jimmy’s tiny frame it was gonna call for some drastic measures
I worked for nights on end putting it together and by the end I had the most bad assed, muscle-building program I’d ever put together. The program was brutal, intense and a little bit insane but if someone was loco enough to follow through with it… they would grow like a weed. I presented it to Jimmy and he loved it
